Cybercrime 101: Juice Jacking

juice jacking

Cybersecurity experts are constantly working to find the best ways to keep technology safe and secure. However, cybercriminals work just as hard to keep up with security tactics and figure out ways around them. Juice jacking is a fairly new hacking method and something as simple as charging your phone is the easiest way to become the next target. Here’s what you need to know about juice jacking.

What is Juice Jacking?

Though some newer phones offer wireless charging abilities, a lot of people still need to plug in power cords in order to charge their devices. The problem with this is the cord itself. Though your charging cord is designed to transfer power to your device, it can also be used to transfer data. Juice jacking is made possible by public charging kiosks.

A computer is connected to the charging kiosk and allows hackers to access personal information when plugged into the rigged kiosk. Hackers may also send malware directly to your device, which affects its performance and puts your personal information at risk.

How Can You Avoid Juice Jacking?

Public kiosks are the main source hackers use for juice jacking, so the best way to avoid it is not to use third party systems to charge your devices. Here are some additional ways to avoid become a victim of juice jacking:

  • Lock Your Device: Luckily, your devices can’t be paired with an unknown device without a PIN code or fingerprint scan. Do your best to avoid using your devices while they’re plugged into public charging sources.
  • Charge Your Device Before Leaving: Try to charge your phone before you leave your home or work. This will prevent you from having to use a public charger and also helps in case of an emergency.
  • Power-Only USB Cables: To keep data secure, power-only USB cables were created. These cables are made without the two wires needed for data transmission.
  • Portable Charger: Take a personal charger with you so that you’re always able to charge your phone securely. Wireless chargers make it possible to charge your phone without even connecting to a physical outlet.
